MM: For those who may not know you, tell them a bit about yourself (from college through your work experience).

GC: I'm originally from Birmingham, AL and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Microbiology. I went on to complete my medical doctorate at Meharry Medical College. I completed my training in Neurology at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Virginia and I am a board certified Neurologist.

MM: So when did the entrepreneurial bug bite you?

GC: In 2008 after working as an Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology at Vanderbilt Medical Group in Franklin, TN for approximately 6 years.

MM: So what's the story behind KCA Medical Group? When was it started?

GC: KCA was incorporated in November of 2008. Due to planning and maintaining an open avenue of communication with my former patients, KCA had 30 patients on the first day it opened despite a complete lack of marketing. Originally, I did have a partner, but due to personal issues, she retired from the practice of medicine mid 2010. I am currently the sole owner and operator of KCA, which has been a huge benefit to me personally and professionally. A lot of personal and professional growth was required to maintain KCA and flourish despite losing my partner. At this point (due to plans for the future of KCA and my current business structure) my growth is without limit.

MM: What makes KCA Medical Group different?

GC: I am a full service neurologist able to offer not only consultations but multiple procedures that most other neurologists are not trained to offer. These procedures include treatments for multiple issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, sciatica, etc. Please see my website for details regarding procedures offered at www.kcadocs.com. I have also arranged my appointment schedule to allow for urgent patient appointments. No patient should have to wait weeks to months to get an appointment with a doctor when an urgent issue needs to be addressed.

MM: Name a few books that you've read lately that you think others may enjoy reading as well (any genre)?

GC: Currently I am reading Jewish Phenomenon, which has been one of the best books that I have read. I typically read at least 2 books per month. All non-fiction and usually related to business philosophy or entrepreneurship.

MM: So what are you listening to in your car? What's in your Top 5 play list (any genre)?

GC: Um, typically I listen to Success CD’s which come with every issue of Success magazine. When I listen to music, I enjoy multiple genres including neosoul, R & B and country. I have satellite so I don't really have a top 5 songs.

MM: What's next for KCA? New projects, events, etc,

GC: This will be a year of significant growth for KCA. Check back with me in 6 to 12 months.

MM: If you could give one piece of advice to someone that's thinking about starting their own business, what would it be?

GC: Read and understand the basics of business philosophy first. Read the classics like “The Richest Man in Babylon”, “Think and Grow Rich”, “12 Pillars” or anything by Kiyosaki. “E-myth” is also very good and needs to be read by anyone starting a business.

Also, expect to spend money (some say 5-10% of your income) on personal development and education (books, conferences, etc). Once you are ready and have a firm grip on what you would like to do, you will likely attract a mentor who has already been down the road you plan to travel. Mentors are KEY to success.
